The Year 2023 in Green & White Numbers

There were 43 competitive games in the calendar for SK Rapid’s first team in 2023, that’s one game fewer than the year before. Unfortunately only four European matches were played during the year, as the club exited UEFA Conference League qualifying at the hands of Serie A side Fiorentina, despite two very exciting and entertaining duels. In the ÖFB-Cup, Rapid were able to win five of the six games played in 2023, two of which went to extra time (3-1 against WAC in February and 5-2 in September against Union Gurten), however the sole loss was an especially tough one to take, as we were defeated in a sold out Cup finale by Sturm Graz back in April.

In the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, Rapid close out the year in 6th place after 17 games (6 wins, 6 draws, 5 defeats, 30 goals for, 18 against). In the first part of the year, the tally was 16 games played, 5 wins, 3 draws and 8 defeats, with 25 goals scored and 29 conceded. The unconvincing figures don’t necessarily tell the story of the attractive, attacking football played especially in the second half of the year, when the club changed coach. With three games to go in 2023, Robert Klauß took over the position of Zoran Barišić, who himself had replaced Ferdinand Feldhofer in the October of 2022.

During the year, no player was able to take part in every single game, but the “Marathon Man” of 2023 was Niklas Hedl, as the young shot-stopper missed just one match. The top goal scorer was - who else - our number 9, Guido Burgstaller, who scored almost a quarter of Rapid’s goals in the calendar year - 20 of 83 to be exact. He added six assists on top of that, to record 26 scorer points, a tally beaten only by Marco Grüll, who scored 14 goals and assisted the same number as well for a terrific 28.

League totals: 33 games - 11 wins, 9 draws, 13 defeats - 55/47 goals

Cup totals: 6 games - 5 wins, 1 defeat - 22/7 goals

European totals: 4 games - 2 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat - 6/2 goals

Domestic totals: 39 games - 16 wins, 9 draws, 14 defeats - 77/54 goals

Competitive games overall: 43 games - 18 wins, 10 draws, 15 defeats - 83/56 goals
