UECL: Defeat against Omonia Nicosia

Matchday 5 of the UEFA Conference League campaign took the Green & Whites to Cyprus, as we would face another team with the same club colours, this time Omonia Nicosia. With an away win on Thursday Rapid would be able to secure an early passage to the Round of 16 in Europe, and with almost a full squad at his disposal, Head Coach Robert Klauß opted for his usual team with one exception, as Nikolaus Wurmbrand would make his starting debut in European competition.

Playing in our Red & Blue founding colours, it took a while for Rapid to really get into the game, but we were able to create the first good opportunity after around ten minutes: Following a precise delivery from Jonas Auer, Louis Schaub stooped to head the ball towards goal from close range, but the opposing goalkeeper showed strong reflexes to keep the scores level (11'). We continued to have a lot of possession, but apart from a shot from distance by Matthias Seidl which whistled just over the top, there were no compelling chances to score in the first half-hour. Although we continued to dominate the game for the most part and patiently combined forward time and again, the long-awaited goal was simply not to follow. Even when debutant Niki Wurmbrand had a great chance after a ball played over into the box, he couldn’t keep the shot down (44’), and again we went close to scoring, but with no success. Despite the hosts offering little in the first half, the teams would go in at the break on an equal footing at 0-0.

Rapid started the second half with a double substitution: Isak Jansson and Jakob Schöller, who was making his European Cup debut, replaced captain Matthias Seidl and Nenad Cvetković (46'). However, the hoped-for momentum failed to materialise, and instead, the home team took the lead with their first shot, cutting into the box from the left and firing high past Niki Hedl from an angle for 1-0 (52’). Around ten minutes later we were back on terms though; Mama Sangaré played a precise through-ball out to the left, Jonas Auer dribbled into the area and picked out Dion Beljo in the middle, who bided his time, allowed a few defenders to commit, and slotted the ball in coolly for 1-1 (62’)! Frustratingly, just four minutes later Rapid allowed a little too much space at the back for Omonia, and a dipping low drive from the right went in at the far corner to leave the guests trailing once more (66’).

Guido Burgstaller replaced Niki Wurmbrand soon afterwards (67') and Noah Bischof came on for Louis Schaub (76'), but as we tried to find a way back from 2-1 down, the game slipped out of our control, and when the keeper came forward deep into stoppage time, the home team could take the ball all the way down and finish into an empty net to make it 3-1 with the game’s final counter.

It meant that Rapid suffered a first defeat of the current Conference League season, and the chance for an early ticket to the last 16 was also missed, but there’s still one more game to go before we sign-off for the winter break. Keep going, Rapid!
