Leo Greiml opts not to renew Rapid contract
Leo Greiml is still in the middle of his physio rehab after suffering a serious knee injury in October. However, the 20-year-old from the Waldviertel will not be wearing the Rapid jersey after his comeback to full fitness.
Rapid’s Managing Director of Sport Zoran Barišić made the following statement on the matter: "We have been informed by Leo and his management that he wants to take the next step in his career with another club starting next season. I regret this very much because, on the one hand, I am convinced that it would have been important for Leo's development if he had played at least the coming season for us and, on the other hand, because we made a very good offer for a contract extension - which was already in place before his injury - more attractive for him two more times in recent months. Therefore, I assume that the decision was not only made for sporting reasons, but that's the way the football business is. In any case, I wish Leo Greiml a full recovery soon and a return to his old level of performance. Since joining us almost four years ago, he has developed magnificently, made the most of the opportunity he was given and has always been a model professional for whom I wish nothing but the best in his future career.
Leo Greiml, like his teammate Martin Moormann, who recently extended his contract until the summer of 2025, joined SK Rapid from the St. Pölten NÖ Academy for the 2018/19 season. Greiml made his professional debut in the penultimate game of the 18/19 season, and in the following season he was still a supplementary player before he was able to establish himself more and more in the senior side. In the current season, he was a regular starter until his serious injury, and scored his first and only goal for the Green & Whites in the UEFA Europa League play-off second leg against Zorya Luhansk in Zaporizhzhya, Ukraine. In total, the popular Lower Austrian made 57 competitive appearances for SK Rapid's first team.
